On my recent stay at this Johannesburg airport hotel I almost forgot how close to the airport we were. However, arriving during rush hour, I was relieved to see most of the morning traffic heading in the opposite direction. The Lakes Hotel is completely self-sufficient in its business, catering & leisure facilities which allowed me to focus upon the purpose of my visit. I didn’t have to worry about finding the nearest printing service, laundrette or even where to collect my golf clubs – everything I needed was on site. In fact on returning to my room, I couldn’t escape the urge to catch up on office developments – the wireless internet kept me fully connected with operations back home.
Being one of a few hundred people attending the conference here, I was pleasantly surprised to find that we weren’t all cooped up in a dark room looking at the previous day’s flip-charts. Instead we began each day with stimulating views over either the lakes or the swimming pool – an excellent reminder of how to unwind at the end of a long day’s discussion. It was so refreshing to have the added benefit of an undercover terrace for breaks – getting some fresh air always helps to re-awaken the senses. The scope for both scheduled and ad-hoc discussions was excellent. Whenever I needed a private room to make a phone-call or organise a quick resume of the day with colleagues, there was one available, with no risk of being disturbed.
Having been to conferences at other Johannesburg airport hotels, I was a little sceptical of what the food choice would be. Being a mixed international group we weren’t the easiest of guests, but the fusion of South African and Western food seemed to delight all the hungry mouths at the table.
